12. After logging into RecFind I get 'computer name is too long' message and RecFind continues to run.

Symptom
During the loading of the RecFind application the 'computer name is too long' message appears. Users can click OK to the message and continue using RecFind.

Cause
The computer name in the network identification setting is too long. RecFind with SQL Server 6.0 or above only accepts computer names which are 10 characters or less.

Solution

Create an environment variable called 'cname'.

  • For Windows 95/98 Users:

    Add the following line to your autoexec.bat file and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

    set cname=xxx (where xxx is a unique computer name less than 10 characters)
  • For Windows NT/2000 Users:

    Create a system variable (right click for properties of 'my computer', then the 'environment' tab) called cname and give it a unique value less than 10 characters long. Click 'Set', then 'Apply' for the changes to take effect.
